North Inlet Creek

Wanted to see how the small creeks were fishing in R.M.N.P. so I decided to fish North Inlet Creek.  The plan for the day is to fish above the falls, which is 3.5 miles away.  I start the hike and come across the creek after about fifteen minutes of walking and decide to try it out.  First cast in and I have a little brookie in my hand.  I continue to fish the creek as it follows the trail and pick up six in the forty minutes it takes me to get to the part of the creek that leaves the trail(100 yards).  I continue the walk up to the falls and finally get there after about two hours of hiking.

I tie on a red Amy's Ant and cast into the pool at the very top of the falls where the creek starts to level out.  Boom!  Fish jumping out of the water to take the fly for my first of many.  I work my way upstream over the next few hours picking up fish everywhere.  Some fish I get on the dead drift, but most come off a little twitch or some skating of the fly.  Before I know it, I have caught 80 fish for the day( the last fifteen on a caddis) and it's 6pm and time to head back.

Fantastic day on the water and can only assume the rest of the park is fishing good as well.

  2. Per your suggestion, I plan to hit North Inlet Creek and/or the Colorado River when I visit RMNP in a few weeks. I hope the fishing is as good as you experienced!
