Same old spot

Headed back to the same spot I have been fishing the last three times I went.  I get to the creek around 10am with partly cloudy skies but pretty nice weather over all.  I start the day off with a green Amy's Ant and switch back and forth between it and the red one.  I manage to catch 17 fish for the day with another 8 hooked that got away.  One cool thing for the day was catching a Palomino Trout for the first time.  The rain started around 3pm and I headed home with another good day in the books.

  1. How come there's no runoff in this secret spot of yours? I've never seen a palomino before.

    1. I don't know why there is no runoff here. There should be. First for me too on the Palomino. Pretty cool surprise for the day though.

  2. I happened to walk by a fly shop in Boulder and I stopped in and got a couple of the Amy's Ants you are always talking up. Any recommendations on size? I got a couple of the smallest, which I think were 12 and 14.

I don't even want to try my normal spots yet because I'm sure there's too much runoff. I've got to find a couple of new spots this summer, though. I've got to make it back to Mad Creek outside of Steamboat, which I haven't been to in a couple of years. I'd also like to get back to Bobtail Creek. I've only been there once. You go west of Empire, over Jones Pass, and you have to hike in quite a ways. I didn't catch tons of fish there, but enough, and it was a nice spot and nobody else ever goes over there except hunters. That pass would probably destroy the car I have now, though.

    1. Try to find size 16 Amy's Ants but 14 will do just fine. You should try North St Vrain, North Inlet and East Inlet in Rocky Mountain N.P. if you haven't yet. South St Vrain above Brainard Lake is pretty good late summer too.

  3. Well done Kevin! The palomino is beautiful. Didn't know we had them here.
