West Fork Clear Creek

Headed up I-70 to do some fishing on Clear Creek up high and then check out the West Fork to finish the day.  The spot I try on Clear Creek is just short of Empire but did manage to catch 9 before walking through the area.  I finish off trying a new spot on the West Fork and manage to catch 13 more including three cutthroat.  Could not have asked for a better day considering they were all caught on a Amy's Ant and I did not lose a fly.

  1. Settle a debate I'm having with myself Kevin. What's #1, fishing or photography? No problems with either as you do both well.

    1. If I am fishing it comes first. Some days I know I am going to a exceptionally pretty spot and bring my nice camera though.

  2. Were you really here in May? That seems way too early for this area. It's great right now, though. Which part were you on? I don't recognize those falls.

  3. I hit it right before runoff started. I don't really know what part I was on, I just used a pullout and started fishing.

  4. Interesting. I didn't think of going that early. Most of June was pretty bad. Now is really great, though. I'd tell you how many fish I caught there last week but I don't want the word to get out. There are several good sections, all the way up to the hairpin turns by the spot called Berthoud Falls. There is a little picnic area there to park. There is a falls that the kayakers call Coors Falls, right next to one of the pullouts, and I didn't think that's what was pictured above, but that has to be it. You can catch one or two at the base of the falls, but it's not as good as it looks. Or maybe you just need a streamer there. Next year maybe I'll try in May. The season there is pretty short, dropping off heavily in mid-September.

    1. The fishing that early is hit or miss. I have been trying new sections of it when I can but have yet to fish up that high. I did not catch anything at the falls!

  5. Last week I caught a tremendous amount, finishing up at the falls. I hooked four in the shallow part of the pool at the falls but they all managed to wiggle off. Upstream of Coor Falls the fishing gets weaker, but then is better again way up by Berthoud Falls. I doubt fish could get past Coors Falls so there probably aren't many big Clear Creek fish above there.

  6. Let me know if you try this spot in May again and have any luck. I'm wondering if I should check it out before June. I don't think I started catching much until the beginning of July, and then it gets really great at the end of July and part of August, and then at the beginning of September it drops off really quickly. I think in mid-September it's back down to zero. Then I headed over to Clear Creek near Bakersville. The season lasts a couple more weeks there.
